Based on some readings, serial killers are some of the most insecure people in the world and cowards. Their motivation may be traced back to this fact. Often, they have a disturbed childhood that could involved physical, mental and sexual abuse by someone they trust and love. The torture they experienced made them develop a guilt free attitude. They feel no remorse or responsibility towards other people because to their mind, it is the world that owes them. It is that frame of mind that allows them to make those crimes repeatedly.
The lack of emotions does not necessarily mean they are withdrawn or are loners. Some of them are but not all. Jack Levin, PhD, the director of the Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict at Northeastern University in Boston said that a lot of them function normally. Some of them may even be active in religious organizations or socio civic movements. This, most of the time, is their major cover up. This is a conscious attempt for other people not to be suspicious of them. As long as people do not suspect them, they can continue with their killing spree.
Their normalcy has another layer of secrecy. For example, many of these serial killers wet their beds way beyond the age it is acceptable to do so. Sometimes, this thing continues 'till they are teenagers. This shame they feel may be one of the motivations for them to kill. To compensate for the shame, they need to assert dominance.
A lot of them also start with arson. That is usually their first crime and in a location very near their home. This is because they feel most comfortable around that area. They know where to run, who the people are and has an approximation of the behavior of the community.
Some serial killers claim that they are doing the killings for a higher purpose, some voice in their head orders them to do the killing because that is what they are destined to do. Others believe that they are cleaning the world of dirty people. This is usually the type of serial killer that has a patter on their victims. Some would only kill gays or women wearing red.
The others are doing it for fun. Killing is like their drug while others kill because that is their need much like some people are addicted to sex, they are addicted to killing.
These killers usually progress from mere killing to killing and raping to killing, raping, then mutilation to torturing to raping to killing to raping to mutilation to cannibalism.
