Although there are some discrepancies about the exact definition of a serial killer, it is characteristically defined as an individual who has murdered at least three people over a period of more than a month. Their driving force for killing is driven by psychological factors.

The people listed below have committed some of America's most horrendous serial killing sprees. Can you identify them?

The Yorkshire Ripper was the nickname of which infamous serial killer?

Answer: Peter William Sutcliffe

Peter was convicted of murdering 13 women and attacking several others. His crimes were committed between 1975 and 1980. At his trial, he claimed that he was ordered to kill the woman by a voice he heard while working as a grave digger. He said that the voice of God was coming from the grave of Bronislaw Zapolski. Despite his lawyer's attempts to have him declared unfit for trial, Judge Boreham declared that he should be tried by a jury. He was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. However, in 1984 he was sent to Broadmoor Hospital after being diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Which serial killer did the media dub the "Campus Killer"?

Answer: Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy the notorious serial killer was born on November 24th 1946, to Louise Cowell. Although his mother was unmarried, she kept the baby and lived with her parents until 1951 when she married Johnnie Bundy. Ted was well educated; he obtained a degree in physiology and began taking law courses at the University of Utah Law. Ted claimed that he began killing as early as 1972, but this has never been proven. His first known victim was in 1974. Bundy was convicted in Florida of three murders. For each one, he received the death sentence. While awaiting execution Bundy confessed to many more crimes. The exact number of woman whom he killed will probably never be known but the excepted number is around 35 although some say the number might be much closer to 100. Ted was executed by electric chair in 1989.

What was John Wayne Gacy's nickname?

Answer: The Clown Killer or the Fat Man

John Wayne Gacy was convicted of killing 33 young men. Many of his victims were found buried in his crawlspace or under his garage. His last few victims were found in a river because as he said he was running out of places to put the bodies in his home and all the digging was bothering his back. During his trial, Gaccy was quoted as saying the only crime he was guilty of was "of running a cemetery without a licence." He was executed by lethal injection on May 10th 1994 at the Statesville Correctional Center.

Who confessed to being the "Boston Strangler?"

Answer: Albert Henry DeSalvo

DeSalvo was never actually tried for the crimes of the Boston Strangler. He confessed to the crimes while in jail awaiting his trial for numerous rapes and burglaries. He could detail many facets of the murders. However, there were numerous inconsistencies and no actual evidence that he had committed the crimes. He was found guilty of rape and assault and was sentenced to life in prison. He was stabbed to death in 1973 while in jail. DNA testing has since proved that he was not responsible for at least some of the crimes of the Boston Strangler.

Who did the media call the Milwaukee Monster?

Answer: Jeffery Dahmer

Jeffery Dahmer was tried and convicted of killing 15 young men, although he was indicted on 17 murder charges. What makes Jeffery's crimes truly horrific is that he not only killed and sexually assaulted the men, but that he dismembered the bodies, had sexual relations with the corpses, kept parts of the bodies as trophies, and ate pieces of his victims. Jeffery was killed in prison while serving his 957-year sentence.
